Lannaya West African Drum and Dance Ensemble (Lannaya) is an Austin-based company that performs authentic and progressive interpretations of traditional African dance, music and folklore.

Lannaya strives to increase an awareness of, and an appreciation for African culture within the context of professional performing arts. In order to do this, youth/audiences must be exposed to positive influences and programs that promote the accomplishments of African culture and history. Expected outcomes include youth/audiences learning about the historical, social and cultural aspects of dance and music.

Lannaya was recently awarded a Project II grant award of approximately $14,000 from the City of Austin.

Grant funds will be used in 2008 and 2009 to support the continuation of our program of arts education performances for Austin Independent School District youth in grades K-12.

Grant funds will also be used to support Lannaya’s capacity building and will fund the positions of a part-time bookkeeper to assist with organizational finances, as well as a part-time booking agent to promote Lannaya and increase the number/quality of secured paying performances.

“The Rhythm and Movement of West Africa” will be presented in 21 school assembly performances at seven Austin Independent School District (AISD) schools for children in grades K-12. The program features a condensed version of the full Ensemble, including three drummers (including a balafon player), and two dancers.
