Jorge Marcet
Jorge Marcet was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He relocated when he was 19 years old to West Lafayette, IN where he followed his studies in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University. After finishing his studies, he relocated to Austin were he met Master Drummer Alseny Sylla under whom he started studying the traditional West African rhythms from Guinea, Ivory Coast and Mali. He immediately fell in love with African music and culture and joined Lannaya in 2006. He continues to study the Djembe under Master Drummer Aboubacar Sylla from Conakry, Guinea.
 
Sevylla del Mazo
Sevylla del Mazo has been studying and performing West African and Afro-Caribbean traditional music for 15 years, and has over 10 years experience as a teaching artist working with "at-risk" youth. In 2000 she received certification in Afro-Cuban drum and dance from the Casa de la Cultura, Old Havana, Cuba, and returned to Cuba in 2001 for additional training. In 2006, she was commissioned to produce a "carnaval" float for the inaugural First Night Austin festival, a New Year's celebration of the arts, and in the fall of 2008, was recently awarded a grant from the City of Austin's Cultural Arts Division to bring drum programming to the Dove Springs community. In addition to her work with Lannaya, she performs with Latin-Jazz quartet, Acoustic Jungle; drums and facilitates for the Drum Cafe; and administrates an after-school enrichment program at Fulmore Liberal Arts Magnet School for the Austin Independent School District.
 
Sekou Sylla (Balaphone/Djembe/Djun)

Sekou Sylla was born into a family of music with a master drummer father, and a mother who was a renowned vocalist. Sekou took to musical instruments with uncanny ease, grace and confidence quickly playing instruments such as the djembe, djun djun, balafon, and krin.  Once he immigrated to the U.S. in 2004 from Cote D’Ivoire, he began to share his love of music with children’s groups and at numerous community events, including performances at One World Theatre, the Ears on Workshop 2004, Cosmofest World Festival 2005, The Masters Showcase @ Huston-Tillotson University 2005, Pecan Street Festival 2005, First Night Austin 2006 with the Djun Djun Dudes, and at the Austin Children’s Museum 2006. Additionally, Sekou has drummed for an after school enrichment program at Manor Elementary.

 
Aboubakar Sylla (Djembe/Djun)

Aboubacar Sylla is a Guinean, born in Cote D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), West Africa.  Aboubakar spent the first 10 years of his life growing up in the urban area of Yopougon, an area inside the capital city of Abidjan. Many children of this area begin drumming at an early age. Customarily, the children begin at an early hour to drum at the musical celebrations, until the older musicians come to play later. This is how Aboubakar began to first learn the traditional rhythms of West Africa. Aboubakar immigrated to the U.S. in 2004 and began to share his musical experiences through performances throughout the Austin area.  He has performed at the 2006 Festival Celebrating Youth, the Violet Crown Festival, La Zona Rosa, First Night Austin 2006, Manor Elementary and the Masters Showcase at Huston-Tillotson University 2005, to name a few. Aboubakar accompanies West African dance classes at Tapestry dance studio.

 
Tonya Lyles (Djembe/Djun)

TONYA LYLES, drummer, singer, dancer, songwriter, poet and storyteller. Tonya began drumming in 1994 (and singing in 1973 at the age of 3!). Her musical styles range from gospel to folk, from the blues to reggae. She has studied drumming with Alseny Sylla, Edwina Tyler, Karuna Warren, Ubaka Hill and Babatunde Olatundji. Tonya drums and sings to heal and transform herself and the community.

Owen Towles (Djembe/Djun)
Owen Towles has been a percussionist for approximately 15 years.  He has spent time learning rhythms from two different continents, having traveled to Brazil, Guinea, and Mali.  While in Africa he studied with drummers and dancers from the National Ballet of Guinea. Owen continues to study and perform with Alseny Sylla and Aboubacar Sylla of Austin, Texas.  Owen has been a member of Lannaya West African Drum and Dance Ensemble since it's inception in 2001.  He is also member of Academicos de Opera a Samba School also based in Austin, Texas.
